August 17th – 20th: Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival - York Racecourse

York Racecourse’s oldest, richest, fastest and most famous races provide sporting excellence combined with fashion and fun over four days.

The event, now title sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire, opens on Tuesday with the richest race of the York year: the £650,000 Juddmonte International, a contest ranked in the top three contests in the world. Wednesday sees the feature race, the totesport Ebor, which in its past has seen plenty of excitement including a winner at more than 100-1 and a victor who became horse of the year. Thursday is Ladies’ Day, with fashion and hats aplenty, while Friday features the fastest race of the season, the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

August 21st: Great British Proms Spectacular - Castle Howard

This event celebrates ten years of the Proms Spectacular at Castle Howard with an evening of family entertainment featuring Proms favourites as well as new surprises.

The event will feature the renowned English National Orchestra, with exuberant conductor Jae Alexander at the helm, as well as star soloists who will perform popular arias and favourites including ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, the Adagio from ‘Spartacus’, ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’, the theme from ‘Harry Potter’ and many more. During the finale, which features Proms favourites such as ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Jerusalem’, the ‘1812 Overture’ and Elgar’s ‘Pomp & Circumstance March No.1’, thousands of fireworks will fill the skies above Yorkshire.

August 13th – 22nd: Ceramic birds and animals exhibition - The Old Glasshouse Gallery in Kirkgate, Knaresborough

The Old Glasshouse Gallery will be running an exhibition of handmade, lifesize ceramic birds and animals between August 13th and 22nd for the annual Feva Festival, Knaresborough’s festival of entertainment and visual arts. Unlocking the wardrobe of Georgian York’s upper classes, this exhibition of costume throws a spotlight on the clothes and accessories worn by members of ‘polite society’, exploring the fashions and changing styles of this extravagant period.

July 31st – August 15th: Yorkshire dialect menu

West Winds Yorkshire Tearooms is celebrating this year’s Yorkshire Day by ‘translating’ its menu into Yorkshire dialect for two weeks. As part of the celebration, watercolour artist Les Packham will be doing a book signing and demonstration at West Winds August 7th and 8th between 2pm and 4pm.

August 1st – 29th: The Great Garden Adventure

To kick the month off Harlow Carr will hold a Forest Party on the 1st. Come dressed up and enjoy rainforest crafts and watch as a tree sculptor expertly carves one of Harlow Carr’s woodland trees. Every day after that there will be a Mystery Garden Quest, while every weekend there will be den building, bush crafts and a scavenger hunt workshop.

August 14th – 22nd: Kettlewell Scarecrow Festival

Follow the trail and find the scarecrows, solve the riddles and identify the mystery word, with prizes to be won. Taste real country baking in one of the village tearooms or the Village Hall.

August 17th – 21st: ‘Full Monty: The Musical’

Based on one of the most successful British films ever made, this musical took Broadway by storm when it first opened in 2000. The story follows six out-of-work and out-of-shape steelworkers as they attempt to transform their fortunes by becoming a team of male strippers.

August 22nd: ‘Music for a Summer Afternoon’

An event to raise funds for the Progressive Supranuclear Association charity, and to raise awareness of this illness. As well as music and strawberries, it will feature a PSP gift stall including soft toys, greeting cards and home-made cakes, and an auction and raffle. 2pm.

August 22nd: ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’

Rain or Shine Theatre Company will perform Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of manner, morals and morality, in an evening of enchanting outdoor theatre.

September 1st – 4th: ‘King Lear’

The Hope Theatre Group will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year with a production of ‘King Lear’, the ninth Shakespeare play the group has staged in a decade. The part of Lear will be played by Edward Thornton, a member of the chorus of Opera North for more than 30 years.
