We start the New Year as we mean to go on with lots for you to read. In fact, our January issue is packed with county features. We begin on the trail of ‘The Water Babies’, the places in Yorkshire that inspired the children’s classic book written by Charles Kingsley 150 years ago in 1862. Malham Cove, Littondale, Arncliffe and Kirkby Malham all feature in one disguise or another in the novel.
The Dales also figure in another of our features showcasing the work of maths teacher and photographer Andrew Hopkins who has captured this landscape and others in the county in breathtaking fashion.
We also go on location with the famous barefoot shepherdess Alison O’Neill who farms on the borders of the Dales National Park leading guided walks through the ‘bleakly beautiful’ countryside where she lives.
We have some stunning images of our winter wildlife from photographer Paul Miguel including an arresting image of two female red deer at full stretch sizing each other during a snowfall.
Another great winter picture of a frost-covered barge is provided by Howard Beck as he journeys along the Yorkshire section of the Leeds and Liverpool canal during a five page article.
And we pay tribute to two young woman with a taste for the past. Natasha Harper loves the music of the 1940s and sings at special events throughout the county. Keeley Harris has organised one of the biggest vintage festivals seen in Yorkshire and is planning an even bigger event in April.
Then there are visits to Tadcaster, Selby, Hipperholme and Shelf and our usual comprehensive what’s on, books and gardening tips pages.
All this and more for only £1.75. Why pay more?
