True romance

Win £200 in our new short story competition

altRomance is in the air and we are looking for love. Our last short story competition was so successful that we are launching another one, but instead of ghost stories, we want to see your romantic side. Your stories can be based on true love experiences or fictional ones but they must be set in Yorkshire and be no more than 1,000 words.

The winner will receive £200 prize money, plus publication in Yorkshire ridings magazine, a year’s free subscription and a copy of 'The Writer’s ABC Checklist'. Second and third placed entrants may also be published and will receive a magazine subscription and a copy of the aforementioned book.

Entries that catch our eye could also find their way into print during the duration of the competition which will run for six months. We are hoping to reveal the winners in our September issue.

Ghostly goings-on in Yorkshire

We reveal the results of our ghost story competition

We’ve had a fantastic response to our ghost story competition with more than 500 entries. The quality of ghoulish tales from around the county has been outstanding and our journalists have had a tough time trimming down the entries to a long list, and an even tougher job selecting a shortlist.

Fantasy in focus

Alex Preston discusses musicians, nicknames and the search for a perfect bathtub with an astoundingly imaginative Yorkshire photographer

If you happen to have a very large bathroom that might be suitable for – wait for it – a mermaid photoshoot, Scarborough photographer Sarah would like to hear from you.

It might sound bizarre, but it’s this kind of sideways thinking that has put Sarah – known in the business as Sarahphotogirl – at the top of her game. Best known for her portraits of musicians from The Darkness to Paul Weller, she has more recently delved into a form of fantastical photography she calls ‘Dark Arts’. Many images are based on children’s story scenarios including Alice (of Wonderland fame) falling down the rabbit hole and Dorothy caught up in the cyclone en route to Oz, and are described by their maker as ‘an eclectic mix of photography and art.'

The Best of the Brontes

With new film and television adaptations of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' and Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights' in production, Peter Riley argues that it was Anne Bronte who could have become the greatest of all the literary sisters.

SHE is the least known of the famous Brontë sisters, but her literary legacy tells us that, had she lived,  she would have eclipsed her siblings  and perhaps gone on to write top class novels for decades.

Lancashire artist Keith Melling has been inspired by the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales

VALLEYS, crags and peaks; sweeping fells and green valleys; vibrant market towns and farms aplenty: the scenery of the Yorkshire Dales is an artist’s playground. More than nine million people visit each year, many of them drawn from outside Yorkshire to take in its views. Among them is artist Keith Melling, who lives near the Yorkshire-Lancashire border and who finds no end of inspiration in the Dales’ diverse scenery.
